The Barbary duck is an exotic race which originates in the Amazon area in South America, where it primarily lives in the trees. Christopher Columbus brought this species of Muscovy ducks to Europe in the 15th century.
Its distinct flight muscles grant the Barbary duck a higher meat content and a richer protein content, which leads to a lower fat content compared to other duck species. The juicy and tender reddish meat has a unique taste of its own. A whole Barbary duck represents a feast for three to four people.
